In the inaugural Premier League season of 1992/93, this match carried immense significance as Alex Ferguson’s team closed in on ending the long wait for a league title, a trophy that had eluded the club since 1967.
Following the heartache of the final Division One campaign, caution prevailed among supporters, but with rivals Aston Villa losing at Blackburn Rovers in an earlier kick-off, the travelling Red Army finally allowed themselves to believe that the 26-year wait was drawing to a close.
A closer look at a magical night in London
Lee Francis was there that night, he told us: "For the first hour, despite not winning, the atmosphere was genuinely one of the best I have ever experienced in all my time watching United. Then the breakthrough came in the 64th minute. Mayhem.”
That goal came from Mark Hughes. The nerves then took over again and they remained until Paul Ince marauded through the Palace defence and midfield, producing a slick finish to settle matters with a late second.
The impact and fan comments
Lee added: “The sense of relief was amazing. We just knew the title was ours to be won at that point.”
Ultimately, the impact of this win was truly felt a week and a half later. When Oldham Athletic beat Aston Villa, United’s first title in 26 years was sealed. An even better celebration happened against Blackburn Rovers when we collected that first Premier League title, and then a week after that, we returned to Selhurst Park to play Wimbledon.
