United flew out of the blocks, driving forward with purpose through Bryan Mbeumo on the right, Patrick Dorgu on the left and the central pairing of Mason Mount and Matheus Cunha.

But it was Arsenal who struck first. Riccardo Calafiori headed home from close range after Altay Bayindir, under pressure from William Saliba, diverted Declan Rice’s corner towards the back post.

United pressed for an equaliser after the interval, with Mbeumo and substitute Amad causing problems, yet Arsenal’s defence held firm to ensure the visitors took the points.

Immediate reaction

Liam C said: "I thought we controlled possession, created twice as many chances as the opponents and we probably did enough to merit a result."

Pete added: "A good performance but we still a lack of bit defensively. I think we need to change the keeper if we're going to have a good season."

Danny S was positive about the performance, saying: These players will score goals for Manchester United, there is little doubt about that. Mbeumo and Cunha have too much quality not to make an impact. Sesko remains more of an unknown quantity in the Premier League and it is still unclear how his understanding with the other two will develop.

Ryan C had a similae view: "Mbeumo and Cunha, though, have already shown their pedigree in this league and underlined it again today. It promises to be a long season, but there is reason for optimism."
