We made a winning return to the Champions League with a comfortable victory over Sabah.

Michael Carrick made four changes from Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Everton, with Noussair Mazraoui and Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu brought back into the starting line-up. Yeny Loro came in for Harry Maguire at centre-back for his first start of the campaign, as well as his Champions League debut, like Dorgu.

The only other change saw Benjamin Šeško preferred to Marcus Rashford for our first Champions League game at Old Trafford since December 2023.

How the match was won

Goals from Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Šeško and Lisandro Martinez secured three points in our opening league-phase game, with a frantic finish to the first half blowing the Azerbaijani visitors away.

A special moment for Lisandro Martinez

This was his fourth goal for the club, since signing from Ajax in 2022.

His first was at Arsenal during a 3-2 defeat in 2023 with his second being a memorable strike at Anfield under Ruben Amorim. His third was against Fulham in a hard-fought win. 

This was his first strike at Old Trafford and you could see it was a memorable moment for the Argentinan.
