All week, the talk had centred on the fury of the home support after their club’s 10-point deduction, and how that anger might push their players on against Erik ten Hag’s side. With the manager watching from the stands because of his own suspension, it felt like another test of character for this team.

Instead, Alejandro Garnacho silenced the place within minutes. His outrageous overhead kick, straight out of the Wayne Rooney playbook, left the ground stunned and gave United the perfect platform. Andre Onana then kept Everton out with a series of strong stops before the Reds took full control after the break.

Marcus Rashford buried a penalty to give us breathing space, and Anthony Martial wrapped it up with a composed finish that continued his impressive scoring run against Everton. It was a performance full of composure, quality and a touch of the spectacular, and one that sent the away end home buzzing.

Special mention aswell to Kobbie Mainoo who looked very composed on his first Premier League start.

Best reaction to Garnacho's goal

Ten Hag was full of praise afterwards, saying: "The start of the game, very good. A very good team goal, the finish was incredible. World class. Probably already the goal of the season. Magnificent moment."

Former captain Gary Neville could hardly believe what he had witnessed on Sky Sports commentary. “I’ve never seen a goal like it… I can’t even comprehend how you do that,” he said. “I think that’s the best overhead kick I have ever seen.”

Garnacho himself looked almost as stunned as everyone else. “I cannot believe it. To be honest I just turned around and thought ‘oh my god’. One of the best I have scored. I am happy,” he said, still taking in the moment.
