The reds press for a goal

It was supposed to be a soft ball game for Ruben Amorim to build some momentum and form in his team which hadn’t scored a single goal this season.

As has become familiar with Manchester United of late, the evening did not go to plan. Two glaring errors from André Onana gifted Grimsby a 2-0 advantage, one they fully merited on the balance of play.

United mounted a response after the interval, with Bryan Mbeumo opening his account for the club before Harry Maguire rose to the occasion to level the tie in stoppage time.

The comeback proved futile. In the shootout that followed, United lost 12-11, with Mbeumo striking the crossbar after scoring in the first round of kicks and Matheus Cunha also failing to convert.

The view of one fan at Blundell Park

Liam C said: “A strange game. The concerning thing is that this wasn’t a team that phoned it in. For the most part, this was a team of Premier League players trying and failing to apply their manager’s system. We don’t seem to get the most out of any of clearly talented players."

Josh D told us: "Most of our players will likely feel ashamed after this performance, although responsibility does not rest solely with them. Some of the blame must also fall on the manager."

The We Want Glazers Out Facebook Group posted about Ruben Amorim: “INEOS and those decision makers should never allow him to resign. Nobody said a rebuild would be easy. Give him a midfielder and a goalkeeper and fully trust him. This could still get better.”

Another fan added about the manager: “I wouldn’t blame him or be upset with him if he did resign.”
