The return of Premier League football brings a daunting trip to the champions, with Ruben Amorim’s side aiming to show resilience and claim a first victory at the ground since January 2016. It is the kind of fixture where reputations are forged and lasting memories made. Here are five United players who could make the difference on Merseyside.
Matthijs de Ligt
Liverpool’s recent run of three consecutive defeats has only made them more dangerous opponents. United will need defensive discipline and composure, and much of that responsibility will fall on Matthijs de Ligt.
The Dutchman has started all seven league matches this season and has arguably been United’s most consistent performer. Now 26 and entering his peak years, he appears settled and assured in his second campaign at the club. Rested over the international break, he will be eager for the physical and mental challenge that Anfield brings.
Amad
The Ivorian winger has caused Liverpool problems before. Very few people will ever forget his last-minute winner against them in a FA Cup fixture back in March 2024.
In January, he drifted past Andy Robertson to score a late equaliser. Robertson has since been displaced at left-back by Milos Kerkez, but the Hungarian has endured a mixed start to life at Liverpool. Amad’s pace and close control could prove a serious test for him. Fresh from scoring a superb free-kick for Ivory Coast during the international break, the 23-year-old’s confidence will be high after a strong display against Sunderland, where he tormented Arthur Masuaku throughout.
Mason Mount
Mason Mount’s reception from the Old Trafford crowd during the win over Sunderland reflected his growing influence. His sharp opening goal was a reminder of his quality, and his work rate and awareness without the ball will be vital against Liverpool.
Mount is no stranger to Anfield. He scored there for Chelsea in March 2021 and featured in several hard-fought draws for his former club. That experience could prove invaluable as United look to frustrate and counter-attack effectively.
Bruno Fernandes
Few players relish a rivalry like Bruno Fernandes. The captain has often been the driving force in United’s biggest matches, and his creativity will again be central to any success on Sunday.
In United’s last visit to Anfield, it was Bruno’s clever reverse pass that set up Lisandro MartÃnez to open the scoring. These occasions can be tense and tactical, but if there is a way through Liverpool’s defence, Fernandes is usually the one to find it.
