A goal from Matheus Cunha on the stroke of half-time proved insufficient as Morgan Rogers’s double brought an end to United’s impressive form on the road, despite a determined response after falling behind for a second time.

United were already stretched by the absence of the suspended Casemiro and the injured Kobbie Mainoo, adding to the unavailability of Bryan Mbeumo, Amad and Noussair Mazraoui on the opening day of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Rogers struck first with a precise effort from the edge of the area, but United responded before the interval when Cunha finished from Dorgu’s pass.

An injury to Bruno

Further disruption followed when Bruno Fernandes failed to reappear for the second half after pulling up injured, depriving United of their captain.

Rogers then underlined his fine form with a second curling finish to secure the points for Villa and inflict United’s first away league defeat since their loss at Brentford 85 days earlier.

Are you positive despite the defeat?

Despite more dropped points, many United fans seemed to be positive.

Lee Francis told us: "I thought that was actually a good performance by us, we controlled the game for long periods and never stopped trying. There was also some positive performances off the bench by Jack Fletcher and Shea Lacey."

Liam C added: "Poor defending aside, that was a decent display. Onwards and upwards."
