When the teamsheet dropped there was a notable moment as Lisandro Martinez was handed the captain’s armband for his first start of the season, with Bruno Fernandes watching on from the stands as he continued his recovery from injury.

Ruben Amorim’s side struck first in the 24th minute thanks to a sensational Patrick Dorgu volley. It was his first goal in a United shirt and it was taken with the confidence and composure of a player well beyond his years.

The second half was far from comfortable as Newcastle piled on the pressure, but United stood firm. In the end, the players were rewarded for their grit and resolve, seeing the game out to secure a deserved Boxing Day win.

Which players stood out?

While Dorgu and Heaven rightly took home individual awards, the Boxing Day win also shone a light on several other performances that have had fans, staff and players talking since full time.

Senne Lammens was outstanding between the posts, producing a series of vital saves at key moments and earning deserved praise for his composure and shot stopping. Lisandro Martinez also stood out, leading the side superbly on his first start of the season. In the absence of the injured Bruno Fernandes, the Argentine embraced the captain’s role and set the tone with his authority and commitment.
