Darren Fletcher will be in the dugout for Wednesday night’s Premier League clash with Burnley, stepping up to take charge in the immediate aftermath of Amorim’s departure.

The former United midfielder is expected to hold the fort until a caretaker is put in place, with the club’s hierarchy already looking ahead to the summer as the point at which a permanent successor will be appointed.

The backdrop to it all is a turbulent end to Amorim’s reign. On Friday, the Portuguese coach was involved in a tense and reportedly hostile meeting with director of football Jason Wilcox, after criticism was levelled at his tactical approach and choice of system following the frustrating 1-1 draw with Wolves. It proved to be the final straw in a relationship that had clearly become strained.

Amorim took another swipe at those running the club

Following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds, the Portuguese coach took another swipe at senior figures at United, insisting he wanted to work as a manager rather than simply a coach and making it clear he was prepared to walk away when his contract expires in 18 months’ time.

Less than 24 hours later, the club confirmed that Amorim had departed his role as head coach of Manchester United after just 14 months in charge, bringing a turbulent chapter at Old Trafford to a close.

A club statement reads

"With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club's leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.

"This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.

"The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future."
