A vital three points in the quest for Champions League football. You cam almost feel that anthem now.
A closer look at what happened
Michael Carrick made two changes from the XI that earned a crucial three points against Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge, last time out, with Harry Maguire coming back in at centre-back, while Amad replaced the injured Matheus Cunha on the wing.
First-half goals from Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko gave us first-half lead in what was a very open 45 minutes against Keith Andrews’s side at Old Trafford.
The second-half was very different and United changed tactics slightly. The away side halved the deficit after a late long-range effort from Mathias Jensen.
Brentford found renewed energy and pushed forward in search of a late equaliser, with Damsgaard directing a header straight at Lammens after a cross from the ever-dangerous Ouattara. Carrick’s side, however, stood firm amid the pressure, with a fired-up Casemiro leading the resistance, to secure all three points and strengthen their hold on third place in the Premier League ahead of this weekend’s crucial meeting with Liverpool.
The impact of the three points
The result sees United stay in third position in the Premier League table, safe in the knowledge that two more points will mathematically secure a spot in the top five, and the promised land of Champions League football that comes with it.
