United Review | Leeds at home

United 1 - 2 Leeds

Something of a reality check and a massive missed opportunity

The boss rang the changes after the 2-2 draw at Bournemouth, making four adjustments to the side.

Lisandro Martinez returned after five games out with a calf issue, coming in for the suspended Harry Maguire. Noussair Mazraoui replaced Diogo Dalot at right-back, while Manuel Ugarte was handed his first start under Carrick in place of the injured Kobbie Mainoo. Benjamin Sesko also came back into the attack, with Bryan Mbeumo dropping out.

It was a frustrating first half

Noah Okafor struck twice for the visitors from West Yorkshire, leaving us with plenty to do. Things went from bad to worse just after the break when Martinez was sent off in the 56th minute, with VAR ruling his challenge on Dominic Calvert-Lewin as violent conduct.

Casemiro gave us a lifeline with his eighth goal of the season, heading home from a Bruno Fernandes cross to pull one back. But despite the response, it was not enough on the day.

After 24 days without a game, we slipped to a disappointing home defeat against Leeds, our first against them at Old Trafford in the Premier League era. We remain third in the table, seven points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea, who are up next.
