Senior figures at the club increasingly convinced he is the right man to lead the rebuild at Old Trafford.
The former United midfielder has emerged as the standout candidate after guiding the side back into the Champions League during an impressive spell as caretaker boss. Carrick, 44, has transformed the mood around the club since taking charge in January following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal.
United had initially planned to wait until the end of the campaign before making a final decision on Amorim’s successor. But reports suggest chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox are now ready to recommend Carrick to Ratcliffe this week.
Carrick has brought calm back to Old Trafford.
Supporters have seen a more organised side on the pitch, while staff inside the club are said to have been impressed by his professionalism and long-term thinking.
The former midfielder has also earned praise for his commitment to United’s academy and youth pathway, something fans always want to see protected. Carrick has reportedly played an active role in recruitment discussions and several first-team players are believed to have backed him for the job permanently.
United explored other options during the search process, but some targets were never realistically available. Thomas Tuchel is expected to remain with England, while Luis Enrique remains committed to Paris Saint-Germain.
Right now, it feels like Carrick has done more than enough to earn his chance. He understands the club, understands the pressure and, most importantly, he has already shown he can steady the ship when United needed it most.
