United Preview | Sunderland away

Sunderland v United preview

With the pressure off (relatively speaking) after securing Champions League football, Michael Carrick’s side will look to play with a bit of freedom against Sunderland

A rare 3pm kick-off for United as we travel to Sunderland. This has also meant a virtually impossible away ticket to get a spare for according to one matchgoing red.

To say there had been a mixture of good and bad moments against Sunderland throughout the Premier League era would be an understatement.

Earlier in the season, with the team in awful form, we secured a comfortable three points thanks to goals from Benjamin Sesko and Mason Mount.

Team news

One of the big question marks ahead of the penultimate away game of the campaign was around the fitness of Benjamin Sesko.

The Slovenia striker scored in that dramatic  over Liverpool but was carrying a shin injury,  after a clash with Ibrahima Konate in the first half. This resulted in his withdrawal at half-time.

There was no real update from the boss on Sesko's fitness but did imply he might give minutes to those who have gone without at this season. This could mean a rare start for Joshua Zirkzee.

Lisandro Martinez is available after suspension. Matthijs de Ligt is set to remain out and will be interesting to see if the former Juventus and Bayern Munich defender returns this season

Patrick Dorgu made his comeback from a long-term injury in the victory over Liverpool and could start against Sunderland, either at left back or left wing.

Two key points from Carrick’s press conference

On securing Champions League football next season "is a really good step" for the club, but it's "not the end at all" so they won't be downing tools for the remaining three games.

On what their motivation is now: "Pride, responsibility, playing for this great club, great supporters and really good togetherness in the group. It's about improving and evolving all the time."
