United 3 - 2 Liverpool

Champions League football secured after a crazy afternoon at Old Trafford

Kobbie Mainoo celebrated his new contract by scoring the winner that swept us back into the Champions League as we clinched a five-goal thriller against Arne Slot and Liverpool.

How events unfolded at a raucous Old Trafford

We flew out of the blocks, with Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko both striking inside the opening 15 minutes, and it felt like we were in complete control early on.

Of course, it is never straightforward against Liverpool. They came roaring back after the break, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo hitting back quickly to level things up and turn the place tense. You could feel the nerves creeping in as the second half wore on.

But this team has got fight, and a bit of magic too. Step forward Kobbie Mainoo, who produced a stunning first-time finish in front of the Stretford End to settle it with around 15 minutes left.

Kobbie Mainoo shines again

When you watch Kobbie Mainoo now, the difference is clear. You can see the influence Michael Carrick has had, especially compared to the previous manager who never fully trusted him. Carrick has come in, backed him properly, and given him the confidence to go and express himself.

That belief is showing every time he steps on the pitch. He looks assured, composed, and ready to take responsibility in big moments.

Fantastic news yesterday!! Kobbie Mainoo signs new contract. #MUFC viewfromkstand.blogspot.com/2026/05/unit...

It is one thing for fans to call for a player to start, but it is another for that player to come in under real pressure and deliver. There was a lot on his shoulders when he returned to the side, with Manchester United supporters desperate to see him back in the team.

But being picked is only half the job. You still have to perform, and Mainoo has done exactly that.
