Macari began his career with Celtic before spending 11 memorable years at Old Trafford, scoring 97 goals for the Reds. He will always be remembered by United supporters for his famous deflected strike, which went in off Jimmy Greenhoff to secure victory over Liverpool in the 1977 FA Cup final and deny our fierce rivals a historic Treble.
After bringing his playing days to a close with Swindon Town, Macari moved into management and enjoyed notable success, particularly during two spells with Stoke City. He guided the club to the Second Division title in 1993 and later made the Stoke area his home.
Away from football, Macari has made an enormous impact through his charitable work. In 2016, he founded the Macari Foundation to help combat homelessness in the city, a cause he has championed tirelessly ever since.
In amongst everything else, the United legend said: "At this stage of my life, and as an ex-footballer, this gives me great satisfaction. It's not about winning and losing. It's a complicated environment, and people recognise that you're doing your best, and that's all you can do."
