Michael Carrick insists our opening-day defeat at Hull City will not change the overall direction the club are heading in.

The defeat was only Carrick’s third in 21 games as head coach, but it was a disappointing start to the new campaign. Central defenders Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy scored first-half goals to put the newly promoted Tigers in control at the MKM Stadium.

Carrick turned to Marcus Rashford, Benjamin Šeško and Kobbie Mainoo from the bench in an attempt to get United back into the game, but the Reds could not find a way through as they suffered a frustrating opening-day setback.

Rashford came on for Dorgu at half-time to make his first appearance for the club since December 2024.

In terms of chances, Ayden Heaven went close with a header that cleared the bar after Fernandes clipped a cross into the box, but United remained vulnerable at the other end. Lammens was forced to race off his line to clear the danger with 56 minutes played.

In the end, the match fizzled out, with Maguire lobbing the final effort well wide during six minutesof added time. This was not the start we were hoping for but there's no need to panic yet.

Immediate post match thoughts

Despite the result, Carrick was keen to keep things in perspective and insisted there was no reason for panic when speaking to TNT Sports and MUTV after the final whistle.
