Leif Davis had stunned United by giving the visitors an early lead, but that only sparked the response we were hoping for. United rattled in five unanswered goals to take complete control and seal an emphatic victory in the pouring Manchester rain, with Chuba Akpom’s late consolation doing little to take the shine off a superb afternoon.

Bruno Fernandes has now scored his second Premier League hat-trick, with both trebles coming in Manchester United’s opening home game of the season. His first arrived against Leeds United in 2021-22, before he repeated the feat against Ipswich Town in 2026-27.

Fernandes has also been among the Premier League’s most prolific shooters this season, attempting 10 shots, a joint-high alongside Erling Haaland.

The United captain now has three hat-tricks for the club in all competitions, having also scored three times against Real Sociedad in the Europa League. That puts him level with club legends including Cristiano Ronaldo, Robin van Persie and former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
