United Discussion | Rio believes Mount and Cunha could be key against Liverpool
You can only beat what’s in front of you, as the old saying goes, and United did exactly that against Sunderland.
Now comes the big one, a trip to Anfield.

Rio Ferdinand has been talking about the game recently, suggesting there’s a weakness in Liverpool’s defence that United could exploit, and that two of our players in particular might be the key to doing it.
“I think the right-hand side of their defence, they’re like the right-back area, you’ve got Szoboszlai filling in there at times, he’s not a natural right-back, you’ve got Konate, who looks a little bit in and out of form at the moment. I think that would be an area that I’d be looking at, and I’d say, listen, Mason Mount or Cunha, I’ll be happy with them going in there.”
After years of one or two injuries seemingly curtailing our attacking chances in the big games, it’s reassuring to know that we have options in the final third of the pitch that can all cause defences problems.
Mason Mount was superb against Sunderland, looking sharp, confident and very much like a player thriving under Amorim. Matheus Cunha made an impact off the bench too, forcing the keeper into a decent save. The dilemma for Amorim is whether both can start against Liverpool – and most fans would probably say no.

Mount got the nod over Cunha last time out and repaid the manager’s faith with that cracking early goal. That moment alone might just earn him another start at Anfield, with the pressure now on Cunha to make his mark when given the chance.
The Brazilian is still waiting for his first goal involvement in a United shirt, though he’s been close a few times. Hopefully, that breakthrough isn’t far away. But for the Liverpool game, it feels right that Mount keeps his place; he’s earned it.
What do you think?
The View from K Stand contributor Olivia T said: “On current form, I’d start Mount ahead of Cunha. However, I’d certainly look at bringing on Cunha after an hour or so. He’ll cause problems if they have tired legs.”
Liam C added: “It has to be Cunha for me. Mount has been playing great, but I think Cunha just has that extra something special, which can be the difference in these matches. I think if we were playing 4-3-3, you could probably start them both with Mount as a number 10 and Cunha out wide on the left of an attacking three with Mbeumo and Sesko.”
