We lost our long unbeaten run to the team it started against on Boxing Day, Newcastle United.

United boss Carrick oversaw his first defeat as Reds boss to suffer a blow in our bid for a UEFA Champions League place, despite the hosts playing the entire second half with 10 men. A poor performance but we are still in a good position.

90 minutes: A winning goal for Newcastle United. Awful defending after a rather poor second-half performance.

We are level: We got a free-kick with seconds to go before half-time. Bruno Fernandes sent the ball into the box and Casemiro heads in.

Half-time stoppage time: Newcastle have a player sent off but Anthony Gordon scores a penalty a few minutes later.

Team News: We have made just one change to the eleven that faced Palace at the weekend, with Noussair Mazraoui handed his first start under this manager in place of Diogo Dalot.

Liam C text us: "On my way up to the North East now. I'm predicting a 3-1 for United. Come on reds!

Pre-match talking points

Michael Carrick may have been a boyhood supporter of Newcastle United, but there is no doubt where his loyalties lie now. His heart and his work are fully committed to life at Old Trafford.

Sunday’s victory over Crystal Palace saw the Manchester United head coach extend his unbeaten run to nine matches in the Premier League across two spells in charge. That record matches the best start any manager has made in the competition’s history, another sign that steady progress is being made under his guidance.

What happened last time we faced Newcastle?

We saw them off at Old Trafford on Boxing Day, claiming a hard-earned victory. The proper United struck first in the 24th minute thanks to a sensational Patrick Dorgu volley. It was his first goal in a United shirt and it was taken with the confidence and composure of a player well beyond his years.

The second half was far from comfortable as Newcastle piled on the pressure, but United stood firm. In the end, the players were rewarded for their grit and resolve, seeing the game out to secure a deserved Boxing Day win.
