United Review | Como away | 26/27 season

Como 4 - 1 United

A disgrace of a performance from players who aren't fit to wear the shirt

Como took an early lead through Nico Paz before doubling their advantage four minutes into the second half, with Anastasios Douvikas finding the net. Paz struck again just before the hour mark, and defender Jacobo Ramon added a fourth to put the result beyond doubt.

Joshua Zirkzee pulled one back for United in the closing minutes, but it proved to be little more than a consolation as the damage had already been done.

Thoughts of Bruno Fernandes. Do you agree with him?

After the match, Bruno apologised to the 700 United supporters who had made the trip, having cut a frustrated figure at the final whistle by ignoring his beaten players and striding across the pitch with his hands repeatedly raised. The gesture recalled Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reaction after United's 4-1 defeat at Watford in November 2021, a result that preceded his dismissal as manager 24 hours later.

However, Fernandes, widely regarded as a football obsessive who regularly watches matches and has a strong understanding of the tactical side of the game, delivered a more damaging assessment when speaking to TNT Sports afterwards.

He said: "It's a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, but sometimes when you give too much the ball to these teams they get confidence."

The views of match-going reds

This is what Andy Mitten from United We Stand posted on Twitter.

Danny Rowe also posted on Twitter: "Very poor performance but great trip."

Barney, editor of Red News, added: "Just find it so utterly depressing and disheartening. We go to football for the escape but for 21 years now the football has added to the problems not escaped from them. This isn’t about a lack of glory, we will go and do whatever the results but the utter disharmony on pitch and the utter greed and lack of leadership and care off it. When financial results matter more than football ones the seeds were sown and until that changes, the ownership, we are in this loop of rinse and repeat.

"The fact that we will now see of two ex players who genuinely care sums up how United has lost its soul. Whether they are ultimately top drawer isn’t actually their biggest issue - the lack of backing from their suits and players is. Mad to think a season looks to be done 11 games in but it is very hard to see how this gets fixed in the short term when Utd are blighted so many long term issues. Just looking at the size of the debt as much as tables shows you the size of United’s problems."
